Growing up in the 90s, one of the things my siblings and I look forward to every Sunday is lunching out with the whole family after mass. My dad being a Sto. Niño devotee, we hear the gospel at The Basilica even if it’s two cities away. Well, there was still no traffic then. A ferry from Mactan takes us to Pier 3 in less than 40 minutes and another 10-minute jeepney ride to the church. Public commuting was easy peasy in the 90s.

After hearing the morning mass, we always head to MyJoy for midday meal. Formerly named MacJoy, their first branch (I believe) is just a short, two-block walk from Basilica. My sibs and I would really get giddy whenever we walked-in the store because of their glass-enclosed “open kitchen” where the halo-halo bar was with huge jars of ingredients on display. We always order the fried chicken with delicious coleslaw on the side and the special halo-halo. Our favorite meal medley!

It’s always a trip back to memory lane whenever I dine in at MyJoy. I had lunch just recently at their SM City Cebu branch, their third (not to mention long overdue teehee), outlet. Had the Combo Meal No. 10 – a set meal with grilled pork belly, chicken, a cup of rice and their signature iced tea shake.

This combo meal is not just filling but satisfying as well. MyJoy Chicken still tastes like how I remembered it the first time I had one, and the full experience should be enjoyed with the coleslaw. Sadly, they don’t serve it with this meal. They charge extra for a serving of coleslaw. The grilled pork belly is marinated in sweet sauce that makes you think of ordering an extra cup of rice to neutralize its candied jolt. And their signature iced tea? With added fruit juice, pineapple perhaps, to make it fruity refreshing. Ahhh! Nostalgia!

I am really happy that MyJoy finally has a branch in SM City Cebu. The interiors are more festive and the shop is well lit, looking like an updated version of their Ayala Center Cebu store. Though for a casual dining restaurant, the set up still looks like a fast food place, somewhere you’d just eat and go. Well, maybe it’s really designed that way. At least the food is good. ^_^
